Fall on your knees: this is Christmas!

It’s been a long time since I last blogged. The busyness has been overwhelming and the irony is, I find that it is often in the midst of doing Christian ministry that I lose sight of the main point of why I’m doing it at all! It is no different with Christmas. In the midst of the festivities, the feasting and the gifting, the parties and the presents… we can miss what Christmas is all about.

There can be many angles to reflect on the meaning of Christmas but at the heart of Christmas is CHRIST-mass, a gathering to celebrate Christ. The reason why gifting is so prevalent during Christmas is because God Himself chose to give His most precious gift, His only begotten Son, for our sin and for our salvation, that very first Christmas.

“… you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

The call at Christmas however, is not merely to receive the gift of God for ourselves, although that is crucial and fundamental – forgiveness of sin, eternal life. The call at Christmas goes beyond receiving Jesus to worshipping Him. The old hymn puts it wonderfully,

“… Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night divine…”

May we have a worshipful Christmas!
